Kindle Book Publishing: The Complete Guide for Indian Authors

Amazon Kindle has fundamentally changed who gets to be a published author. Before Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) existed, the only way to put a book in front of a global audience was through a traditional publishing house or a costly vanity press. Today, any writer in India, whether in Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, or a small town in Rajasthan, can publish a book on the world’s largest digital marketplace within 24 to 48 hours, at zero upfront cost.

The opportunity is real. Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem holds over 90% of India’s eBook market share, according to market data from Business Research Insights. The number of eBook readers in India is projected to reach 144.1 million users by 2029, according to Statista’s eBook market forecast. Self-published authors accounted for over 50% of Kindle’s Top 400 books globally in recent years, and Amazon has paid an average of USD 520 million in royalties to self-published authors each year, according to data compiled by Whop’s eBook statistics report.

That said, publishing a Kindle book and successfully selling a Kindle book are two very different things. This guide covers the complete process, from preparing your manuscript to setting the right price, understanding India-specific royalty structures, using KDP Select effectively, and marketing your Kindle book to reach readers who will actually buy it.

What Is Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)?

Kindle Direct Publishing is Amazon’s self-publishing platform. It allows authors to upload manuscripts, design or upload covers, set prices, and distribute their books to Amazon’s global marketplace, both as eBooks readable on any Kindle device or the free Kindle app, and as print-on-demand paperbacks.

KDP is free to use. There is no cost to upload or publish. Amazon earns its revenue by taking a percentage of each sale, with the remainder going to the author as royalties.

Once your book is live on KDP, it is available for purchase on Amazon India, Amazon US, Amazon UK, and the other Amazon marketplaces worldwide where you choose to distribute it. Readers can buy your eBook and download it instantly, or order a paperback that Amazon prints and ships on demand. You hold no inventory and pay nothing for printing until a sale is made.

Is Amazon KDP Available in India?

Yes, fully. Indian authors can create a KDP account, upload manuscripts, publish both eBooks and paperback books, and receive royalty payments directly to their Indian bank accounts via NEFT transfer.

A few things Indian authors specifically need to know when setting up their KDP account:

Bank account and payment: KDP pays royalties to Indian bank accounts via electronic funds transfer (EFT/NEFT). Payments are made approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which royalties were earned, once your earnings cross the minimum payment threshold (approximately Rs. 7,000 for bank transfers, as noted by BFC Publications’ KDP guide).

Tax information: When setting up your KDP account, you will be asked to complete a tax interview. For Indian authors, you typically need to submit a W-8BEN form (or its equivalent) to confirm your non-US tax status and avoid unnecessary US tax withholding on international sales.

Indian language publishing: KDP supports eBook publishing in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, and Gujarati, in addition to English. For Indian language manuscripts, KDP currently accepts Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format. Note that paperback publishing for Indian languages is not currently available on KDP, only eBook format is supported for regional languages, per Amazon’s official KDP guidelines.

Kindle Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing, What Is the Difference?

Before deciding whether Kindle publishing is the right route for your book, it is important to understand how it differs from traditional publishing.

Kindle publishing gives you speed, control, and higher royalties per copy. Traditional publishing gives you professional editorial support, physical distribution, and the credibility that comes with being selected by an established house.

Many Indian authors choose to start with Kindle publishing to build an audience and prove commercial interest, then approach traditional publishers for subsequent books. Others build their entire author career on KDP. Both are valid paths, the right choice depends on what you want from your publishing journey.

If you want to explore traditional publishing for your manuscript, Anecdote Publishing House accepts direct submissions and provides a free consultation. Our books are distributed to over 100 bookshops across India. You can also read our complete guide on how to publish a book in India to understand both routes in detail.

Step 1: Prepare Your Manuscript for Kindle Publishing

Accepted File Formats

KDP accepts the following file formats for eBook upload:

  • Microsoft Word (.docx): the most commonly used and generally the most reliable for text-heavy books
  • EPUB: the standard digital book format, gives the most control over how your book displays across devices
  • PDF: accepted but not recommended for text-heavy books, as PDFs do not reflow well on smaller screens
  • MOBI: older Kindle format, still accepted

For most authors writing fiction or non-fiction, submitting a clean, properly formatted Word document or an EPUB file produces the best results.

Formatting Your Manuscript for Kindle

The Kindle format is reflowable, meaning the text adjusts to fit whatever screen or font size the reader is using. This is fundamentally different from print formatting, which fixes text to a specific page size. Poor formatting in a Kindle book causes text to display incorrectly, breaks page flow, and creates a frustrating reading experience.

Key formatting requirements for a Kindle eBook:

Remove manual formatting: Delete any manual tabs used for paragraph indents, manual page breaks (except for chapter starts), multiple spaces, and any other manual formatting that looks fine on screen but breaks when the text reflows on a device.

Use style-based formatting: Apply heading styles (Heading 1 for chapter titles, Heading 2 for subheadings) through your word processor’s built-in Styles panel. Do not format headings by manually changing font size or weight, this does not translate correctly to Kindle format.

Set paragraph indents: Use the paragraph formatting settings to create a first-line indent of approximately 0.25 to 0.5 inches. Do not use the Tab key.

Create a linked table of contents: Kindle books require a navigable table of contents. If you are using Word, Amazon’s free formatting tool Kindle Create can generate this automatically.

Image requirements: Any images in your book should be saved at a minimum of 300 DPI. Place images inline in the text, not as floating objects.

Using Kindle Create

Kindle Create is Amazon’s free formatting tool that converts Word documents into Kindle-ready files. It applies consistent formatting, generates a linked table of contents, and allows you to preview how your book will look on different Kindle devices before you upload. For most authors, Kindle Create significantly simplifies the formatting process.

Step 2: Design Your Kindle Book Cover

Your book cover is the single most important visual element of your Kindle listing. On Amazon India, readers browse through rows of small thumbnail images. A cover that does not communicate your genre clearly, does not look professionally designed, or is not readable at thumbnail size will be scrolled past without a second glance, regardless of how good your book is.

Kindle Cover Specifications

Amazon’s required specifications for a Kindle eBook cover:

  • Recommended dimensions: 2,560 x 1,600 pixels (ratio of 1.6:1)
  • Minimum dimensions: 1,000 pixels on the longest side
  • Maximum file size: 50 MB
  • Accepted formats: JPEG or TIFF
  • Colour mode: RGB (not CMYK)

Design Principles for Kindle Covers

Genre legibility at thumbnail size: Your cover will often appear at approximately 160 x 250 pixels in search results. The title must be readable and the overall design must communicate the genre at that size. Test your cover image by reducing it to thumbnail size before finalising it.

Genre-matching design conventions: Romance novels in India typically use warm colours, illustrated or photographic imagery of couples, and script or serif fonts. Thrillers use darker palettes, bold typography, and tension-suggesting imagery. Self-help books use clean layouts, strong typography, and aspirational imagery. Deviating from genre conventions means your book may not be recognised as belonging to the category readers are browsing.

Professional execution: A cover designed by someone without book cover design experience consistently underperforms against professionally designed covers, regardless of the underlying content quality.

Step 3: Set Up Your KDP Account in India

Setting up a KDP account is free and straightforward. Go to kdp.amazon.com and sign in with your existing Amazon account, or create a new one.

After logging in, you will need to complete the following before your first publication:

Author/publisher information: Your name (or pen name), address, and contact details.

Bank account details: The Indian bank account where your royalties will be transferred. You will need your account number and IFSC code. Verify these details carefully, incorrect bank information is the most common reason for delayed payments.

Tax interview: Complete the tax information section to establish your non-US tax status. Indian authors are not subject to US tax withholding if this step is completed correctly. Follow KDP’s on-screen guidance through the W-8BEN form process.

Step 4: Upload Your Book and Enter Metadata

From your KDP dashboard, select “Create a new title” and choose between Kindle eBook and Paperback. You will then enter your book’s metadata, the information that tells Amazon (and readers) what your book is and helps it appear in the right search results.

Metadata Elements That Affect Discoverability

Title and subtitle: Your title should be compelling. For non-fiction, the subtitle is particularly important, it often carries keyword value that the title alone does not. A subtitle like “A Practical Guide for First-Time Authors in India” communicates the subject matter, the format, and the audience.

Author name: Use a consistent author name across all your publications. This builds recognition and helps Amazon’s algorithm associate your books with each other on your Author Central page.

Book description: You have up to 4,000 characters for your book description. This is your sales page, it must hook the reader immediately, communicate what the book is and who it is for, and create a desire to read. For fiction, write in jacket-copy style: introduce the protagonist, the central conflict, and the stakes without revealing the resolution. For non-fiction, address the reader’s problem directly and explain why your book is the solution.

Series information: If your book is part of a series, enter the series name and volume number. This links your books together in Amazon’s system and improves series discoverability.

Step 5: Choose Your Kindle Book Categories and Keywords

Categories and keywords are how Amazon’s algorithm knows where to place your book in its vast catalogue. Getting these right dramatically affects how many readers discover your book organically.

Selecting Categories

You can select up to three categories for your Kindle eBook and three separate categories for your paperback (if you publish both). Amazon’s category system has changed significantly — authors can now choose up to three categories per format directly in the KDP dashboard during upload, as noted by Manuscript Report’s KDP category guide.

The most effective category strategy is to find the most specific sub-category that accurately describes your book and has enough browsing traffic to drive discovery. A book placed in “Fiction > Romance > Contemporary Romance > Indian Fiction” will have less competition than one placed simply in “Fiction > Romance,” and the readers browsing that specific sub-category are more likely to be your exact target audience.

Choosing Keywords

Amazon gives you seven keyword slots, each accepting up to 50 characters. These are not displayed to readers, they are metadata signals used by Amazon’s search algorithm to determine when your book should appear in search results.

Effective keyword strategy for Indian authors:

  • Use phrases your target readers actually type into Amazon search, not broad generic terms
  • Include location-specific keywords where relevant (“Indian romance novel,” “Delhi fiction,” “Mumbai setting thriller”)
  • Include genre combinations (“contemporary romance India,” “self-help for Indian professionals,” “YA fiction India”)
  • Avoid repeating words already in your title or subtitle — these are already indexed by Amazon
  • Do not use author names, book titles, or trademarked terms as keywords

Step 6: Set Your Price and Understand KDP Royalties in India

Pricing is one of the most consequential decisions you make as a self-published author. Price too high and you lose readers who compare you to established authors they already know. Price too low and you signal low quality, or leave money on the table.

KDP Royalty Rates for India

Amazon offers two royalty options for Kindle eBooks:

70% royalty option: Available for books priced between Rs. 199 and Rs. 650 (approximately USD 2.99 to USD 9.99) sold in eligible countries, including India. Under this option, a delivery cost is deducted per copy based on file size, typically Rs. 7 to Rs. 15 for a standard text-heavy book.

35% royalty option: Applies to books priced below Rs. 199 or above Rs. 650, or sold in countries where the 70% option is not available.

The practical implication: for most Indian authors writing fiction or non-fiction, pricing in the Rs. 199 to Rs. 499 range maximises the royalty rate while remaining competitive with other eBooks in the Indian market.

Example calculation:

  • eBook priced at Rs. 299
  • 70% royalty = Rs. 209.30
  • Minus delivery cost of approximately Rs. 10
  • Net royalty per copy: approximately Rs. 199

To earn Rs. 1,00,000 in royalties at this price and royalty structure, you would need to sell approximately 500 copies.

KDP Select and Indian royalties: If you enrol your book in KDP Select, you become eligible for the 70% royalty rate on sales in India regardless of price, an important benefit for books priced below the standard Rs. 199 threshold. More on KDP Select in the next section.

Print Book Royalties

For paperbacks published through KDP Print (print-on-demand), your royalty is calculated as a percentage of the list price minus the printing cost. Amazon displays the printing cost per copy in your KDP dashboard when you set your book’s trim size and page count, allowing you to calculate your net royalty before finalising your price.

Step 7: Decide on KDP Select, Is It Right for You?

KDP Select is an optional programme where you agree to publish your eBook exclusively through Amazon for a 90-day period. During that period, your eBook cannot be sold or distributed through any other platform, not Apple Books, not Google Play Books, not Kobo, not your own website.

In exchange for this exclusivity, you gain access to:

Kindle Unlimited (KU): Your book is made available to Kindle Unlimited subscribers, who pay a monthly subscription fee to read unlimited books. You earn money based on the number of pages of your book that KU subscribers read, calculated using a per-page rate from the KDP Select Global Fund. This can add meaningfully to income for books with high read-through rates.

70% royalty in additional territories: KDP Select makes your book eligible for the 70% royalty rate in countries including India, Brazil, Japan, and Mexico, regions where non-Select books earn only 35%. For Indian authors wanting to maximise earnings on Amazon.in specifically, this is a significant benefit.

Promotional tools:

  • Kindle Countdown Deals: A limited-time discounted pricing promotion that shows the original and promotional price simultaneously with a countdown timer, creating urgency.
  • Free Book Promotions: You can offer your book for free for up to 5 days per 90-day enrolment period. While you earn no royalties during this period, free promotions can significantly boost downloads, reviews, and the book’s algorithmic ranking.

When KDP Select Makes Sense

KDP Select is most beneficial for:

  • First-time authors who want to build an initial audience and review count quickly through Kindle Unlimited
  • Fiction authors, particularly in genre fiction (romance, thriller, fantasy) where Kindle Unlimited subscribers are highly active
  • Authors who sell the majority of their books through Amazon India and do not have a meaningful audience on other platforms

KDP Select may not be the best choice for:

  • Non-fiction authors, business authors, or thought leaders whose credibility benefits from wide distribution across multiple platforms
  • Authors building a brand as a speaker or consultant who want their book visible everywhere
  • Authors with an existing audience on platforms like Apple Books or Kobo

At the end of each 90-day enrolment period, you can choose not to renew, and your distribution rights return to you to publish on other platforms. KDP Select is not a permanent commitment.

Step 8: Publish Your Print Book Alongside Your eBook

Many Indian readers still prefer physical books. The ratio of print to digital readership in India is approximately 70:30 in favour of print, according to author accounts and industry commentary. Publishing a paperback alongside your eBook gives you access to this larger segment of readers.

KDP’s print-on-demand service (KDP Print) allows you to publish a paperback from the same dashboard as your eBook, at no additional setup cost. Amazon prints a copy each time one is ordered and ships it directly to the buyer.

Print Book Formatting Requirements

Print books require different formatting than eBooks. The text does not reflow, it must be laid out for a specific page size (trim size) with fixed margins, page numbers, and chapter headers.

Accepted file format: PDF (exported from InDesign, Affinity Publisher, Atticus, or another professional layout tool)

Common trim sizes for Indian market books:

  • Fiction: 5″ x 8″ or 5.5″ x 8.5″
  • Non-fiction: 6″ x 9″
  • Children’s books: Various sizes depending on format

Cover requirements for print books: Unlike eBook covers (front only), print books require a complete cover wrap, front, spine, and back cover, in a single PDF file. The spine width is calculated based on your page count and paper type. KDP’s cover calculator generates the correct template dimensions.

How to Market Your Kindle Book in India

Uploading your book to KDP and clicking Publish does not automatically create an audience. Amazon’s marketplace has over 6 million Kindle titles, with tens of thousands of new titles added every year. Discoverability requires active marketing effort alongside Amazon’s algorithmic tools.

Optimise Your Amazon Listing

Your Amazon listing is a search result, treat it like one. Every element contributes to whether Amazon shows your book to relevant readers:

  • Write a book description that speaks directly to your target reader’s desires or problems
  • Use all seven keyword slots with specific, researched phrases your readers actually search
  • Select the most specific categories that accurately represent your book
  • Create an Author Central page (at authorcentral.amazon.in) to link your books, add your biography, and include a photo

Generate Early Reviews

Amazon’s algorithm gives significant weight to review count, review velocity (how quickly reviews accumulate after launch), and average rating. Books with 15 or more reviews see substantially higher conversion rates than those with fewer, according to data from HMD Publishing’s Kindle guide.

Before your launch:

  • Send advance reading copies (ARCs) to beta readers, book bloggers, and Bookstagrammers who are active in your genre
  • Ask them to post their reviews on the launch day or the week of launch

After your launch:

  • Follow up with every reader who reaches out positively and ask them to leave a review on Amazon
  • Do not offer compensation for reviews, this violates Amazon’s terms of service

Build an Author Platform

An author platform is your visibility outside Amazon, the channels through which readers who are not yet on Amazon can discover you.

For Indian authors, the most effective platforms are:

Instagram (Bookstagram India): India has a large and active book community on Instagram. Regular posts about your writing process, book content, and reading life build a following that translates to sales. Tag your posts with genre-specific hashtags to reach readers in your category.

LinkedIn: Particularly effective for non-fiction authors, business writers, and professional development titles. LinkedIn’s algorithm favours long-form posts and articles, publishing writing samples or book insights directly on LinkedIn builds both readership and author credibility.

Author newsletter: An email list is the most direct communication channel you own. Unlike social media followers, email subscribers receive your messages regardless of algorithm changes.

Use Amazon’s Promotional Tools

If enrolled in KDP Select, use Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions strategically:

  • A Free Book Promotion during your first weeks of publication generates downloads, reviews, and ranking momentum that outlasts the promotion itself
  • Time a Kindle Countdown Deal to coincide with your marketing push, the countdown timer creates urgency that increases click-through rates

Participate in Literary Events

Physical presence at literary events remains one of the most effective ways to build readership in India. The New Delhi World Book Fair, Jaipur Literature Festival, Kolkata Book Fair, and regional literary events give you direct access to engaged readers. Even as a Kindle author, having print copies available at events dramatically increases your sales and personal connections with readers.

Kindle Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing, Which Should You Choose?

This question does not have a single correct answer. It depends on what you want from your publishing journey.

Choose Kindle publishing if:

  • You want to publish quickly and retain complete creative control
  • You want higher royalties per copy and are prepared to manage your own marketing
  • You are writing genre fiction where Kindle Unlimited subscribers are a significant audience
  • You want to test whether your book finds a readership before committing to a longer traditional publishing process

Choose traditional publishing if:

  • You want professional editorial support, cover design, and distribution without managing it yourself
  • You want your book in physical bookstores across India
  • You value the credibility and brand association of being selected by an established publisher
  • You prefer to focus entirely on writing and leave the business of publishing to professionals

Combine both strategically: Some authors publish their first book through KDP to build an audience and demonstrate commercial viability, then approach traditional publishers for their second book with a proven readership. Others publish non-fiction through traditional routes for credibility and physical distribution, while publishing supplementary or series content on KDP.

If traditional publishing interests you, Anecdote Publishing House reviews every manuscript submission and provides a free consultation. Our books are distributed to over 100 bookshops across India, and our PR team supports every author we publish. You can explore our full genre catalogue and our published authors to understand what we publish and who we work with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kindle Direct Publishing free for Indian authors?

Yes. There is no cost to create a KDP account or to publish eBooks and paperbacks through the platform. Amazon earns its revenue by retaining a percentage of each sale (30% for books in the 70% royalty tier, 65% for books in the 35% royalty tier). There are no monthly fees, listing fees, or upfront costs.

How long does it take for a Kindle book to go live after upload?

Amazon typically reviews and approves new Kindle eBook submissions within 24 to 72 hours. Print book submissions take slightly longer, typically 3 to 5 business days, as Amazon verifies the print files. Your book appears on Amazon India and global marketplaces after approval.

How do I receive KDP royalty payments in India?

KDP pays royalties via electronic funds transfer directly to your Indian bank account. Payments are processed approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which royalties were earned. You must reach the minimum payment threshold (currently approximately Rs. 7,000 for bank transfers) before payment is initiated. Ensure your account number and IFSC code are entered correctly in your KDP account, incorrect banking details are the most common cause of payment delays.

What royalty percentage do Indian authors earn on Kindle eBooks?

Authors earn either 35% or 70% of the list price, depending on pricing and eligibility. The 70% royalty applies to eBooks priced between Rs. 199 and Rs. 650 sold in eligible territories including India. A small delivery cost (typically Rs. 7 to Rs. 15 per copy) is deducted from the 70% royalty. Books priced outside this range, or sold in countries where the 70% option is not available, earn 35%.

Can I publish my book in Hindi or other Indian languages on Kindle?

Yes. KDP currently supports eBook publishing in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, and Gujarati. For these languages, KDP accepts manuscripts in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format only. Paperback publishing for Indian languages is not currently available on KDP. Regional language books are eligible for the 70% royalty rate when enrolled in KDP Select and sold to customers in India.

What is KDP Select and should I enrol my book?

KDP Select is an optional 90-day exclusivity programme. Authors who enrol agree to sell their eBook only through Amazon (no other platforms) in exchange for access to Kindle Unlimited, the 70% royalty rate in territories including India, and promotional tools (Kindle Countdown Deals and Free Book Promotions). KDP Select is most beneficial for fiction authors targeting Kindle Unlimited readers and for first-time authors building an initial audience. Non-fiction authors building a thought leadership brand may prefer wide distribution across multiple platforms.

Can I publish both a Kindle eBook and a print book on KDP?

Yes. KDP allows you to publish an eBook and a paperback as separate titles from the same dashboard. Both can be linked on your book’s Amazon product page so readers see both formats and choose their preference. Print books require separate formatting (a print-ready PDF) and a full cover wrap (front, spine, and back).

What happens to my copyright when I publish on KDP?

Your copyright remains entirely with you. KDP operates on a non-exclusive agreement, you retain full rights to your work and can publish elsewhere outside any KDP Select exclusivity period. You can also withdraw your book from KDP at any time (outside an active KDP Select enrolment period).

How many books do I need to sell to earn a meaningful income from Kindle publishing?

At a royalty of Rs. 199 per copy (for an eBook priced at Rs. 299 in the 70% tier), you would need to sell approximately 500 copies to earn Rs. 1,00,000 in royalties. Most new Kindle authors sell fewer than 100 copies in their first year without active marketing. Authors who invest in marketing, generate strong early reviews, and publish consistently over multiple titles build the kind of readership that generates sustainable income over time.

Can I change my Kindle book’s price, cover, or content after publishing?

Yes. You can update your book’s price, cover, description, keywords, categories, and interior content at any time through your KDP dashboard. Price changes take effect within 12 to 24 hours. Content updates (new interior file) take 24 to 72 hours to process and appear on Amazon. This flexibility is one of the significant advantages of self-publishing over traditional publishing, where changes require publisher approval and coordination.

Does publishing on Kindle prevent me from approaching a traditional publisher later?

It depends. A self-published book that has sold poorly on Kindle may actually make it harder to approach traditional publishers for the same title, publishers know those initial sales are gone and may not want to invest in relaunching a title that underperformed. However, a self-published book that demonstrates strong sales and readership can attract traditional publishers for either a new edition or a future book. If your goal is eventually traditional publishing, approach it strategically, read our guide on how to publish a book in India to understand the full landscape before committing to a single route.

What is the difference between Kindle Unlimited and buying a Kindle book outright?

Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s subscription service, readers pay a monthly fee and can read an unlimited number of enrolled titles. Authors earn based on the number of pages read by KU subscribers (not a full royalty per download). Readers who buy a Kindle book outright pay the full list price, and the author earns the full royalty for that sale. Both models can contribute meaningfully to a Kindle author’s income, though the per-read earnings from KU are typically lower than per-purchase royalties.

Ready to Publish Your Book?

Kindle publishing is a powerful tool for reaching readers across India and the world, but it works best when your book is professionally prepared, strategically positioned, and actively marketed.
