At 26, Sagar Azad quit his job to follow his passion for storytelling. He started Champ Readers, a platform that helps new writers get noticed. In January 2021, he launched his own publishing company, Anecdote Publishing House, to give authors better publishing opportunities.
A Childhood Love for Stories
Sagar grew up in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, in a middle-class family. He loved stories, both the ones he read and those he experienced in everyday life. His love for storytelling inspired him to create Champ Readers and Anecdote Publishing House.
Creating a Platform for Writers
While working in Kota, Sagar noticed that experienced writers had connections to promote their books, but new writers struggled. So, in 2016, he started Champ Readers to help young writers promote their work. Initially, the platform focused on book launches, writing workshops, and storytelling events. Over time, it expanded to online promotions and professional training.
Starting Anecdote Publishing House
After working with Champ Readers for years, Sagar realized that quality storytelling was often overlooked in publishing. So, he launched Anecdote Publishing House in 2021. This publishing house helps new authors publish books in print, e-book, and audiobook formats, ensuring their work reaches a wider audience.
Supporting National & International Writers
Sagar and his team work with both Indian and international authors. For Indian writers, they offer mentoring, editing, and book promotions. For international authors, they provide global exposure through digital platforms. This creates a space where authors from different backgrounds can learn from each other.
Recognized for His Work
In 2023, Sagar received the ‘Pride of Nation Award’ for his contributions to the publishing industry. His company has published well-known writers like Mainak Dhar, Kartikeya Ladha, Kapil Raj, Aditya Sen Gupta Dhar, and Varun Wadhwa.
Business Model
Champ Readers earns money through events and workshops like book launches, storytelling sessions, and writing classes. Anecdote Publishing House generates revenue from book sales, royalties, and partnerships with distributors, schools, and libraries.
Challenges for Indian Writers & Solutions
Many Indian writers face problems like limited access to publishers, difficulty in marketing, and financial constraints. Sagar’s companies help by offering editing, designing, and book distribution services. They also organize events where authors can connect with readers.
The Changing Publishing Industry
Sagar believes that digital platforms, e-books, and audiobooks are changing the publishing world. Social media has also made it easier for authors to reach readers directly. However, the industry is crowded with content, making it tough for new writers to stand out.
Future Plans
Sagar wants to grow Champ Readers by organizing more interactive events and reading programs. He plans to collaborate with schools to include storytelling in education. With Anecdote Publishing House, he aims to publish more regional and international authors. He also hopes to start a literary festival, bookstore, and partnerships with book clubs to promote reading.
Message for Writers & Entrepreneurs
Sagar’s advice to aspiring writers:
“Keep writing. Your voice is unique, and there are readers for every story. Seek guidance, improve your skills, and share your work with the world.”
For entrepreneurs, he says:
“Believe in your vision, stay determined, and don’t let failures stop you. Success comes with patience and passion. Keep moving forward, and the impact will follow.”
